Things to Do in Kratie

Kratie hosts one of the world's last populations of critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphins in the Mekong River waters just north of town. The small riverside settlement feels genuinely untouched by mass tourism, with French colonial buildings scattered along dusty streets and a pace that makes you want to stay longer than planned. Total authenticity here. The surrounding countryside offers traditional Khmer villages, ancient temples, and pristine river stretches—making this the perfect base for seeing Cambodia's quieter side.

The food scene stays refreshingly local here. Riverside Khmer restaurants serve fresh Mekong fish, often grilled with rice and vegetables for $3-5, while street food shines at morning and evening markets with noodle soups, grilled meats, and fresh fruit. Limited Western options available. Don't miss the local Mekong fish curry—rich, fragrant, and completely different from tourist area versions.

Visit during dry season from November to April. December through February offers the most comfortable weather with warm days and cool evenings perfect for riverside dining, while March and April get hot but bring animals to the river more frequently. Wet season runs May to October. The countryside turns lush and beautiful, but heavy rains can make rural roads impassable and dolphins harder to spot.
